Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the multidimensional environment on ageism among older adults in South Korea focusing on the difference between Baby-boomer (young elderly) and the old elderly people on ecological-system approach. This study used data from Social Science Korea (SSK) survey, a project initiated by Korean government to collect data on different social science indicators. Older adults who born between 1955-1963 year were named as Byby-boomer and over 65 years old were named as old elderly people and these two groups were included in this study. Perceived multidimensional environment was measured in four domains, (1) Individual-system (2) Micro-system (3) Mezzo-system (4)Macro-system. Differences between Baby-boomer(young elderly) and the old elderly people were tested with t-test and logistic regression was used to examine the influence of perceived multidimensional environment on ageism for aggregate group, and simultaneously for young and older elderly sample. Covariates included demographic variables such as age, gender, number of children, education, income, religion, and marital status. No big difference was found between the mean of ageism score for Baby-boomer(young elderly) and the old elderly people. For the Bay-boomer, higher score on ¡®Depression¡¯, ¡®Family solodarity¡¯, ¡®Family support anticipation¡¯, ¡®Welfare policy satisfaction¡¯ had an impact on higher cognition of ageism. However, for the old elderly people, higher ¡®Life satisfaction¡¯ score were related to easement ageism score. On ¡®Family solodarity¡¯ and ¡®Family support anticipation¡¯ showed same results as Baby-boomer. This study was meaningful because it focused on the influences of multidimensional environment related variables on ageism, which was verified in this study.
